“That’s what I’m seeing more than anything, just some stomach illness with vomiting, but even with that we’ve not had an excessive number of kids out,” Breitung School District School Nurse Cathy Yarck Cootware said.
School staff said they expect the flu season at the beginning of each year, and try to teach kids to wash their hands, sneeze and cough into their arms,
among others to minimize the impact.
“Well flu season is something that occurs every year, it’s important for schools and parents to work together. It actually doesn’t actually peak in our area until February and then into March,” Yarck Cootware said.
School staff offered some advice to parents on how to help their kids be able to fight the yearly flu.
“You can also do things to try to keep your child’s immune system by making sure they’re getting enough sleep at night, eating healthy, a good nutritious diet,” Yarck Cootware said. “Keeping them well hydrated,
lots of water and also making sure they’re getting a lot of exercise and activity during the day.”
